Only six spots left for trip to Italy organized by Penticton Art Gallery

There are still six spots left for history and art buffs who might be interested in a trip to Italy to view some of the world’s most famous historical sites.

Antonella De Michelis, an administrative assistant at the Penticton Art Gallery (PAG) and a Doctor in Architectural History from the Courthauld Institute of Art in London, England, will be leading the trip to Italy in September.

Largo Argentina is located in the heart of downtown Rome and the place where Julius Caesar was assassinated. This will be one of the many sites visited when the Penticton Art Gallery sponsors a trip to Italy in September. There are only six spots left for the trip.

Dr. De Michelis has been leading the arTTalks Made in Italy lecture series over the past several months. That series wraps up with a bonus lecture next Tuesday, May 1 in the Tea Room at the gallery. The first seven lectures in the series were sold out.

“I lived in Italy for 20 years before deciding to come back to Penticton, where I grew up, but I am excited about going back,” said De Michelis.

The trip will take place from Saturday, Sept. 21 until Sunday, Sept. 30.

The cost of the trip is $3,670 (non-refundable deposit of $2,000), but doesn’t include airfare as participants must take care of their own flights, but she’s more than willing to assist on booking flights, said De Michelis.

The trip will include day trips to world-famous museums and art galleries and guided tours of Rome, she said.

“We will touch the travertine of the Colosseum, walk the ancient basalt cobbles and trace the footsteps of Pope Joan,” she said.

Each day will start with a museum visit, following by an afternoon walking tour led by De Michelis.

The travel package includes private coach transfer from airport, a week’s transit pass, eight nights accommodation in a boutique hotel in the heart of Rome (which includes breakfast), a welcome aperitivo and six hosted meals (wine included), all museum entrance fees (with headsets), and a day excursion to the archeological site of Ostia Antica with a guest archaeologist.

Some of sites that will be visited include Castel Sant’Angelo, Via Papalis, Colosseum and Roman Forum, the underground levels of the Basilica of San Clemente, Villa Farnesina, William Kentridge Embankment murals and Jewish Ghetto.

Tour participants will also visit the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s basilica. The final day excursion will be to the archaeological site of Ostia Antica with renowned archaeologist Dr. Crispin Corrado.

This is the first time PAG has organized a trip to Italy and hopefully won’t be the last, said De Michelis.

“I’m very excited to be leading this tour and every excited about being able to return to Italy,” she said.

Anyone interested in going on the tour to Italy is asked to contact De Michelis at PAG at 250-493-2928.

Tickets for the final arTTalks lecture Tuesday night are also available at PAG, located on Marina Way in Penticton.
